The beginning of the end for men?

The BBC reports that scientists have created sperm cells from stem cells.

Now I am no biologist for sure, but doesn't everyone produce stem cells? And anyone's stem cells can be switched on to produce any type of human cell? Does this not imply that it would be possible to turn a woman's stem cells into sperm cells? Is this the beginning of the end for men's part in the reproductive cycle?

Can't live with them, can live without them?

So, now all we need is to be able to grow them in jars and we can all go off and munch on our Soma while watching the feelies...:)

Spooky!

The Brave New World similarities made me shudder too!

They're embryonic stem cells. We don't produce them any more. You would need an embryo.

But yes, if this is possible, then it could be the beginning of the end.

You could harvest a few cells from your embryo-daughter, so that she could father a child as an adult, or at any other time for that matter.

Obviously some will object to converting an entire embryo into sperm, but if every sperm is sacred", why not? :)"
