As the Lewes Bonfire Council would doubtless tell you, they're not burning "the Pope" but a specific, historical Pope: Paul V. Doubtless that's very comforting for any Catholics in the crowd. We need an equivalent loophole for flag-burning. A protest against the cheap Chinese nylon ones, perhaps?"
