...we didn't have locals in the city this time round so it wouldn't have helped anyone cost-wise to throw a byelection this May. I suppose they both only have one year to go, and there may be a feeling that that's a year in which they can make themselves even less electable, but when I think about it, when I wonder whether I would put up as a candidate if she stepped down the biggest thing making me feel not is that whoever wins now would have to run again in under a year's time!

Quite right Jock.

I have tried to contact Tia MacGregor three times over various issues and she has ignored me every time. I haven't seen her since she came round canvassing for her original alection.

If she had been thinking of defecting since January why didn't she announce her intentions when there was chance to hold a by-election at the time of the locals. Could it be that she knew she wouldn't be re-elected on a Conservative ticket?

And as for the cost. What utter tripe. What price real democracy?

I'm sick of politicians of all parties putting themselves ahead of the residents. It's high time we started putting up our own candidates and taking them on.

When a Lib Dem resigned under a cloud here in Lib Dem-run Cambridge City it cost £6000 to the council - and there was only half a year left before that seat was due for election anyway.

Dr Tia MacGregor, who might have been my ward colleague if I were elected last year has ditched her Young Middle Class Assocation membership card and joined the, er, Young Middle Class PartyTories.

As foretold on Tuesday here, she has joined Paul (is-it-a-middle-name-or-some-affectation-I-ought-to-drop-if-I'm-joining-the-party-of-the-aristocracy) "Austin" Sargent, in taking their little "Independent Group" on Oxford City Council under Mr Cameron's wings. For the moment then it's just the two of them and at least they'll get to remain leader and deputy leader, Nanki-Poo and Poo-Bah, or whatever they want to style themselves.
