I didn't blog on this one

I didn't blog on this one (because let's face it, in matters of Lib Dem energy policy I'm something of a heathen) but I quite agree, it's an terrible verdict and one that will invite even more dangerous acts.

I do not think it matters

I do not think it matters much: I am landless, and I am a lot richer than many, if not most, of the worlds landholders. It is far more important what opportunities are available to you.

And if people ban some of your options, you usually end up with fewer options. Which is the argument for libertarianism.

I should have thought that

I should have thought that the distinction was obvious. The landless one cannot live without paying someone else for having somewhere to do so. Surely it ought to be a libertarian's fundamental human right to be able to have an equitable share of the planet we are all born on. Otherwise they are automatically subjected to a coercive and abusive system.

there is no way the landless

there is no way the landless poor can sustain themselves without recourse to selling their labour to another

There was no way the landed poor could sustain themselves without labouring on their land, and they had to sell some of the products of that labour to buy the things they did not make for themselves e.g. ploughs.

So what is the difference? What matters is the value of the fruits of your labour, and the number of people available for you to deal with.

Given the price of labour today, compared with the cost of foodstuffs, no healthy person need go hungry in this country. Hence all those Polish immigrants.

Redistribution

Totally agreed. These Tories are always ready to rail against redistribution to non- and low-earners (overlooking the fact that the welfare state is so badly designed that it traps people on benefits and disourages work, marriage and savings) but if you ever suggest that there is massive redistribution from poor to rich, primarily via land values, you come in for a right good kicking, as I did on ConHome back in 2006.
