Spooks: in the Aftermath of Stern

Anyone see Spooks tonight? I know "M" doesn't think too highly of it, but it's fascinating viewing for me. The imaginative conspiracy theories of BBC script writers and all that.

Tonight, the last in the current series, is about some environmental activists, "Divine Earth" threatening to stop the Thames barrier being lifted to stop a spring tide surge that will carry a 6m wall of water up into central London.

They are doing so in order to have a top secret government plan exposed that sets out their alternative to the Stern report's recommendations...that the UK and US have decided that climate change is inevitable and unstoppable. That instead of tinkering we should go into partnership to rampage across the globe forcibly taking control of as many carbon energy sources as possible, cornering the market so we can remain vaguely comfortable as 25-35% of the world's population is wiped out by the effects of climate change, and that we develop full scale nuclear weapons replacements to arm ourselves for the inevitable "war to end all wars".

Who knows, huh?

hmmm ... would that be the sort of secret plan that might start with the invasion of a couple of middle eastern countries on completely spurious grounds by any chance?

Nah .. couldn't happen ...

I certainly would not put it past any government to have a contingency along these lines. Though actually I suppose Stern should show that such a scenario is unnecessary. The cost of waging such a total and permanent resource war is going to be a lot more than the 1% of GDP he reckons we need to avoid the worst effects of climate change anywyay. Then again, it's not necessarily those bits of the western economies that are currently powerful who will benefit from Stern spending", and they are powerful enough to be able to seek protection in different government responses."

If you haven't read Bill Engdahls' A Century of War - Anglo-American Oil Politics and the New World Order" I suggest you do.

US foreign policy may be summed up as "Energy Security,Energy Security,Energy Security" and they use "Full Spectrum Dominance" to achieve it.

Whlie we cheer them on...."

Nope, but reading Brezinski's Grand Chessboard it seems to me that none of this is anything new, and certainly not down to climate change per se. But of course when I were a lad in the seventies we were only just beginning the boom in British oil with confident predictions that it would all have run out by now, so similar predictions, if they were being made in the US, would have needed planning for, climate change or no.

Well, the comments from the UK Peak Oil community are pretty much "The writers have done their homework"!"
