An article on the BBC today about housing and nationalists:

Competition for housing is the "frontline" of a battle to prevent the far right's rise, MPs have warned.

Labour MP John Cruddas and Lib Dem Simon Hughes said policymakers had failed to recognise BNP gains were linked to anger over who gets homes.

...reminded me of a scene in "Cathy Come Home" the other night where the women in the hostel are arguing with a black woman that "her type" was getting all the available housing.

possible solution - invest in housing or let local government decide if it wants to borrow? or is that too radical

Whilst I agree that there should be a level playing field, and I used to subscribe to the DCH line, I now no longer do think that that is the most suitable way of running public housing.

I simply no longer believe that local authority housing can be more democratic than housing owned directly by the residents in the form of a Community Gateway/Community Land Trust model that I wrote about in response to Frank Field's similar theorizing earlier in the year."
